Summary

This is a good example of how to be a Force for Good company because it describes it a UN-sponsored tool (part of a larger programme) that enables business decision makers to incorporate biodiversity priorities and impacts into their decision processes.

Description

The United Nations Environment Program World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) is UNEP's biodiversity assessment and policy support centre and acts as a global integrator for biodiversity information.

In 2003 it launched a public-private partnership called Proteus, with a five-year programme to make biodiversity information more freely available.

The Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT) is the first step towards improved global collection, monitoring, curation and interoperability of biodiversity data. It involves an alliance of several globally respected organisations and has combined data from several sources into a cohesive set of linked databases.

The IBAT for Business that will be launched during 2008 will allow companies to access critical site-scale biodiversity information and so allow decision-makers to incorporate important biodiversity priorities into their risk assessment procedures for existing and potential operations.
