This is a good example of what a Force for Good business is, and how to be one, because:
It states the need for a joined-up, holistic approach
It shows how to put that into practice: from top to bottom and end to end across the business
It states intentions and it shows through precise metrics how performance is evolving over time
It understands the need to improve further in the future, and frequently repeats the company’s intention to do so, clearly stating what the priorities are
Description
Creating Shared Value starts with a description of the company’s business philosophy, and shows how this has evolved since the company was founded.
It describes how this thinking translates into strategy, business principles and behaviours, and identifies five priority areas for inclusion in the report.
The report for priority area then shows how each one links back to the two overriding goals (“create value for Nestlé” and “create value for society”) and gives a detailed description of activities in each area together with the rationale for the decisions taken and key metrics.
The five key areas reviewed (and the ‘shared value’ created) are:
Manufacturing and environmental footprint:
Building high-quality, high-performing factories whilst reducing the impact on the environment also provides jobs and helps develop local suppliers
People:
Motivating and training people to do their best for the company also provides employment opportunities worldwide and the opportunity for self-development and better standards of living.
Agriculture and rural development:
Engaging closely with local communities provides a more secure supply of better quality agricultural raw materials and reduces costs whilst increasing yields. It also protects the environment, provides employment and produces a more reliable quality end product.
Nutrition, Health and Wellness:
Innovation strengthens the brand and provides consumers with access to better products.
Marketing and communications:
Increases sales and gives consumers a better understanding of the benefits they can bring.
