These were some of the phrases expressed by Tony Manwaring which I picked up when he addressed the UK-India Business Leaders Conference on Climate Change in parliament, 26 June.

Not so much a glimpse, more a wormhole

I have been celebrating the importance of Indian business leaders - the New VIctorians of the Green industrial revolution.  By 2050 India will overtake China in terms of population.  When I talked of getting a glimpse into the future, I should have said that sitting in the House of Commons yesterday was more like travelling through a wormhole.  Seeing tomorrrow, today (well, strictly speaking, yesterday!)

As if by magic, but really down to the leadership and good judgement of Malini Mehra of the Centre for Social Markets, I found myself in the ultimate carbon trading zone: one in which ideas are exchanged, practice is shared, the problem is recognised and the support built to deliver solutions.  Corus, Tata, Mahindra, Hindustan Unilever - joined by BT and HSBC.  The New Victorians, Indian leaders of the green industrial revolution!

Yesterday  I wrote about what could be done to close the "wide gap between what is understood about global warming by the relevant scientific community and what is known by policy makers and the public", identified by James Hansen.  Building a new and much more dynamic relationship between business, civil society and government is going to be vital to finding any solution, but there's going to be more to it than that: how do we build that relationship in the first place?   And then I had the great joy of interviewing Arie de Gues ...
