Why your Big Society is not big enough
posted by John Drummond  on July 30, 2010

David Cameron has plans for a Big Society. “We want to give citizens, communities and local government the power and information they need to come together, solve the problems they face and build the Britain they want.“
(May 18, 2010)

It’s less than two months into this new government and it is already becoming increasingly clear that their plans for a big society are not big enough. Let me explain why.

Culture and behaviours - a new core to the regulatory model?
posted by David Phillips  on July 29, 2010

As regular readers of my blog know, I'm fascinated by the role that culture and behaviours play in so many of the critical aspects of business activity which have been in the spotlight since the credit crunch. Whether it’s stewardship, governance, risk, selling (or mis-selling), reporting etc - when things go spectacularly wrong and jeopardise the existence of an organisation, it’s typically the result of unacceptable behaviour.

The UK Financial Reporting Council have today published the new UK Stewardship Code.  The Stewardship Code sits alongside and is complementary to the UK Corporate Governance Code, published in May, and includes principles on:

• The escalation of activities taken to protect or enhance shareholder value;
• Collective engagement;
• Voting policy;
• Managing conflicts of interest; and
• Public reporting and reporting to clients.

posted by Ramon Arratia  on July 23, 2010

What a coincidence! Some days ago I blogged about how bad eco-restaurants are in general with their greenwash, and how little science is behind their marketing, However, I was just invited to the opening of the first Otarian restaurant in the UK (Soho, London), and these guys are great!

The Government’s Big Society idea: it could be more cunning than you think
posted by Jonathan Berry  on July 19, 2010

Is the "Big Society" really a way to build voters' commitment to the governing coalition? As everyone in my profession knows, the way to engage employees in an organization is to seek their opinion on how to change it. You normally get some good ideas back, but the other huge value is that people who have had a say in designing their organization are far more committed to making it work. They become more productive and innovative and develop better relationships with their clients. So does this logic extend to neighbourhoods and communities?
