Twitter - an unexpected force for good in an upcoming cyberwar
Summary

Without necessarily intending to, Twitter has created meaning in the social web, by giving a highly up to date platform to all those Iranians that want to update their fellow citizens and the world about what is going on in Iran.

Under the so-called hashtag #IranElection everybody can find endless tweets from Iranians. After most journalists had to leave the country as their election visa expired and no reasonable expectation of decent information from Iranian media can exist there is a new way to be updated on the events.

Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Blogs and other social and sharing platforms are partially becoming doors through which information can be exchanged without being blocked by censorship. Where the quality of information does not seem to be an essential criterion it becomes obvious that a medium, previously criticised for its superficiality, can develop into a valuable tool; that being, it is huge and difficult to control and an important counterbalance to restricted media coverage of events and possible propaganda.

It even leads to a situation where American Twitter users who were anticipating maintenance work on the service are rallying behind the decision from Twitter to postpone it until the service will be less used and needed in Iran. Global and active solidarity in almost the blink of an eye!

It is good to know that some business evolutions are not predictable and highly adaptive as they develop. Especially if that makes your company a force for good.
