At the Crossroads: Floods, Fires & Another Teachable Moment

Like the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, the extreme weather events occurring worldwide offer a teachable moment on the need to address climate change. Here is the speech I would love to see President Obama give in a special session of Congress, perhaps on Earth Day next April 22, or sooner.

If we are looking for ways to chip away at the budget deficit, to keep America competitive and to use market-based mechanisms to build a clean energy economy, then subsidy reform should be near the top of the list.


Climate Bill: Principle Draws Interest

It appears that momentum may be building in Congress for another attempt to put a price on U.S. carbon emissions before the international community convenes in Copenhagen this December.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, announced last week that she hopes to have a cap-and-trade bill blessed by her committee by the end of the year.

Last February, three Republican leaders in Congress filed a brief in the U.S. Supreme Court arguing that when it comes to global climate change, judges and Justices should mind their own business.

In response to a lawsuit that argues greenhouse gas emissions are a “public nuisance”, three of Congress’s most active opponents of responsible climate policy filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court last February. Rep. Fred Upton, Rep. Ed Whitfield and Sen. James Inhofe told the Justices it is inappropriate and unnecessary for courts to get involved in America’s climate policy.
