What can HR learn from MJ?
posted by Emma Reynolds  on March 23, 2009

Just when the world needed a 'pick me up', when consumer confidence was seriously lagging, along came someone by the name of Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson is back. He is back big time. How about this for a statistic. MJ sold one million tickets in a day. At an average price of £50 per ticket, that equates to selling £50 million STERLING worth of tickets, in one day. One day. £50 million. I ask the question, what credit crunch?

Revolutionising work

Does it blow your mind to think that a quarter of Turkey's population is under the age of 12. Wow! And what about the fact that Brazil will need 36,000 Engineers by 2012 but only 16,000 places in Universities? Oh, and Africa’s  population is currently growing  faster than any other major region and is projected to account  for 21 percent of world population by 2050, up from just 9  percent in 1950. Incredible! Guess what percentage of total website traffic to FTSE 100 websites, ends up at the career section? 80%. Yep. 80%.

I wanted to tell you about an event we are hosting with the Telegraph Media Group to really shake a stick at the Old World of Work. We all know that social, political, economic and demographic change is transforming global commerce, organisational structures and individual freedoms. As we enter a world that is more fluid, less centralised and less certain about old assumptions and old models, the only way to survive in this rapidly shifting environment is by becoming more collaborative and focused on outputs – survival means being excellent, in other words. There is no middle ground. I love that. I might even say it again! Survival means being excellent. In other words, there is no middle ground!
