Young voices of talent - Simon Ellis

The Global Fellowship Program was launched for young people to gain an understanding of what it will take to compete in, and contribute to the new global economy. We interviewed four young students who visited Brazil, India and China as a part of this programme, wherein they went to a local school, lived with local host parents and worked with a multinational organisation.

As a Global Fellow, Simon visited Shanghai for six weeks. A student at Cambridge now, Simon, though stricken with the obvious difference between the rich and the poor, illustrates how they are all underpinned by one value system.  Having worked with Virgin Atlantic, he talks about the world becoming a smaller place, where globalisation is here to stay, and Britain need to rise up and see it as an opportunity, and not a threat.

Great initiative but still the preserve of the few
I think experience of other social and political contexts is vital in building a greater awareness in people and their approach to work. I recently spoke to one of our force for good pioneers, Jo da Silva (see here http://www.forceforgood.com/Articles/Meet-the-force-for-good-pioneers-353/1.aspx). She has set up Arup international development at Arup and cited her experiences of working in among other places post disaster Rwanada and Sri Lanka (genocide in the first, tsunami in the second) as being fundamental in developing her approach to business. Therefore I celebrate initiatives such as these that give talented people the opportunity to broaden their awareness before they begin their careers. However my concern is that these opportunities are still very much the preserve of the few and exclude young people with huge potential from non privileged backgrounds.
