The UK has the world’s first code for investor stewardship. Improving the quality and quantity of investor stewardship will help make the code a working reality. 20/20 vision is needed to clarify what is meant by investor stewardship and to find ways to help investors and companies put this into practice building on many years of progress in UK corporate governance. Introducing value-adding stewardship programmes takes time but we anticipate full and effective implementation will have been achieved by 2020. Our ideas are aimed at the UK but we believe that they will be of value in other markets. We believe that a critical mass of investor stewards is vital. We also recognise that not every shareholder can or needs to be a good steward. Integrating the Business Reporting Supply Chain highlights recommendations from the interviews of 25 key business leaders from around the globe on what should be done to improve corporate governance, business reporting, and auditing in the aftermath of the financial crisis.

Beyond Regulation: improving corporate governance in the UK and beyond. The conference will provide industry insights from senior figures in the business community and the practical tools to help you improve the quality of what you do in the boardroom. Toolkits have been developed by the Good Governance Forum, set up after the financial crisis in response to questions around the effectiveness of corporate governance. Attendees will also have the chance to be involved an interactive boardroom conversation workshop. The event will address corporate governance in the morning and stewardship in the afternoon. This will be followed by a drinks reception and dinner.

A speech given by Sir David Walker at the Tomorrow's Company lecture on 'Stewardship in practice: Renewing behaviours and changing cultures in the City' - this was given on 19th May 2010 at Gresham College, London.

In 2004 Tomorrow's company published a report on what robust  and responsible financial services would look like after comprehensive research and consultation with hundreds of proffessionals working in the city. Restoring Trust has been validated by the financial crisis of 2008 and is still a useful document to provide clear goals.  In many ways, the challenges facing today's policy makers is to get to the system which Restoring Trust sets out. The inquiry is in essence an industry self portrait.  It is based on interviews and workshops conducted with over 500 people drawn from every aspect of the investment chain.  In formulating our proposals we have taken account of a number of government inquiries, industry reviews, trade body and company initiatives.
