As part of the Centre for Social Markets’ Climate Challenge India Initiative, this paper looks at the state of renewable energy in India.  The challenges faced by India, projected by the International Energy Agency to be the world’s 3rd largest emitter of greenhouse gases by 2015, are fairly daunting.  Although this means there are many opportunities as well. The Centre for Social Markets (CSM) is an independent, non-profit organisation dedicated to making markets work for the triple bottom line – people, planet and profits.

Using a case study from the Nilgris Biosphere Reserve in India, the Green Indian States Trust created a challenging presentation which analyses the link between poverty and environmental degradation as well as offering ideas of how to break the cycle.

The Green Accounting for Indian States Project has been set up to create new measures of economic success that would be a better yardstick, than conventional GDP figures, to look at the trade off between development and sustainability in the Third World .  This monograph is the eigth in a series that offer arguments relevant to potential force for good companies in South East Asia.  This article looks at why freshwater quality has to be included in these measures.
