‘The Boardroom and HR’s Role – with Sir john Egan’ forms the first report from a series of roundtable dialogues that the CIPD and Tomorrow’s Company are hosting to explore issues around how HR leaders can work with leaders and boardrooms to help shape tomorrow’s sustainable and adaptable organisations.

The Global Leaders of Tomorrow project is part an ongoing programme of research led by Ashridge Business School as part of the European Academy of Business in Society (EABIS) Corporate Knowledge and Learning Programme and has received financial support from the EABIS Founding Corporate Partners IBM, Johnson and Johnson, Microsoft, Shell and Unilever. The research is based on a global survey of CEOs and senior executives at companies participating in the UN Global Compact conducted in September and October 2008, at the height of the 2008 global financial crisis. This is complemented by in-depth interviews with 33 individuals, including HR and sustainability executives and other thought leaders.

This article looks at inherent problems associated with seeking economic growth above all else.  In particular it advocates the creation of a more stable system; one that does not constantly need extra-resources, which the world can no longer supply. John Fullerton is a former Managing Director of JPMorgan, where he worked for 18 years in New York, London, and Tokyo, and subsequently was CEO of an energy focused hedge fund. He is now seeking to launch an investment fund for high impact sustainability initiatives and is working on “The Purpose of Capital,” a book about the role of investment capital in sustainable economics.
