Alice Tepper Marlin talks about how she moved from financial analysis to developing a single global measurement system for workplace standards.She does not describe how her company's approach works, but she talks clearly about a multistakeholder approach (so to some this might seem like a bit of a sales pitch) but she talks passionately about the importance of every sector of society working together: how activists can help and inspire business to do the job really well, working with Trades Unions to solve problems in a realistic and achievable manner.She describes how a multistakeholder approach means a better deal for all those stakeholders: employees and businesses, investors and civil society.

Bill Gates makes a insightful speech on the social inequalities that we are surrounded by today, and hoe technology can make a difference to the one billion people in the world who live on less than one dollar a day. According to an article in Time Magazine, governments and non profits play an integral role in helping them, but it is mainly corporations that have the resources and the technology to help in fulfilling social, ethical or environmental goal. This is where his idea of ‘Creative Capitalism’ comes in. The question is then, is it different from what the social business ideal is? Something to think about…

Muhammad Yunus meets UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and describes the activities and success of microfincance provided by Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. He suggests that Africa would benefit from this model and he also goes on to explain ‘Social Business’ - business with social rather than purely financial objectives

Entrepreneurs in Action is a dynamic organization working with the public and private sector to develop the entrepreneurial and financial skills of the next generation.  EiA offer programmes and activities which unlock the untapped talents of young people, and work in partnership with successful companies to give students a real taste of enterprise through hands-on business challenges and learning programmes. Lara is from Coloma School in Croydon, and through EiA worked with the Windsor Leadership Project, where their task was to film an advertisement to try and get more young people involved with the project. While doing so, she discovered that in a team what works the best is working toward everyone’s strengths, and not away from it. That talent is all about having a skill that one needs to develop and polish.

In this challenging atmosphere, she learnt that leadership makes a big difference indeed, and that it is important for leaders to be positive. She also thinks  that it is important for the educational system to be balanced – giving opportunities for practical work as well.
