Community is the purpose of business: the co-creation of wealth and value
posted by Tony Manwaring  on December 3, 2008

I had the great joy of spending a wonderful time last week talking with Anant Nadkarni - Vice President, (Corporate Sustainability) of Indian giants Tata.

Anant quoted Jamsetji Tata, the Founder of Tata (1839 – 1904):  "In a free enterprise, the community is not just another stakeholder in the business but in fact the very purpose of its existence.”

Creating value in the 21st century: the ‘value matrix’, modelling ‘business success + sustainability = forceforgood’ (3 of 3)

Blog 1 argues why business success + sustainability = forceforgood; Blog 2 gives loads of examples; Blog 3 develops a model to better understand what is going on and discusses the importance of supporting the innovation that will need to underpin these new models of value – a model which underlines the importance of creating the frameworks that will enable forceforgood solutions to be developed at the scale required to drive business success and really secure sustainability.

Creating value in the 21st century: examples of how ‘business success + sustainability = force for good’ (2 of 3)

Glimpses of 21st century value creation are breaking through.  There are plenty examples which show how being a forceforgood will be the next great source of competitive advantage.  But not yet nearly enough – the pioneers are blazing the trail, but to achieve scale and reach the tipping point which will unleash this next wave of value, we need many more who like Rajeev Dubey of Mahindra will argue with conviction and passion that “concern for sustainability is good for business, & a lack of it will ultimately destroy us”.

Creating value in the 21st century: why it matters so much that ‘business success + sustainability = forceforgood’ (1 of 3)

“Again out of destruction a new spirit of creativity arises", wrote Werner Sombart in 1913.   Almost 100 years later we need to achieve a new wave of ‘creative destruction’.  Value creation in the twenty first century will be all about achieving business success through sustainability.  Being a forceforgood will be the next great source of competitive advantage.  As citizens, consumers and employees we will empower, demand and purchase, and want to be part of companies that are a force for good.  This is the first of two linked blogs, the second will begin a ‘rolling blog’ which will bring together global examples of businesses at the cutting edge of this new and transformational wave of value creation.

Creating value through sustainability (5) = Global Green New Deal + 100 Day Action Plan to Save the Planet

Two major developments and one great example give confidence that my argument that we are on the threshold of a powerful new wave of economic development is reaching a tipping point. Firstly, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Green Economy Initiative: Secondly, The 100 Day Action Plan to Save the Planet – and electronic book just published in the USA by the Presidential Climate Action Project, which sets out to do what it ‘says on the tin’, and is the subject of a fascinating blog by PCAP Executive President Bill Becker.
